SPORTDISCUS searching hints

At times free text database searching is not a wise way to find specific information especially when the terms searched are very common words (e.g. soccer, football). However, this type of searching is recommended when one is looking for a specific name of a test for often the abstract will have test names mentioned in full or abbreviated form (e.g. profile-of-mood-state is a descriptor, but one can find many more records which have this term in the Abstract field).

Free text searching may also be a good way to find names of individuals or other specific terms. In over 900 monographic records the Abstract field will yield the Contents of a book. In some cases there are too many names to add to the descriptor field, but these are listed in the Abstract field, usually in the full name form. Thus if one searches for a person in the Descriptor field, e.g. king-b, the searcher should also search for: billie jean king as a free text term. Tables of Contents are included for monographic records when the chapter titles are descriptive, thus giving the searcher more flexibility in finding specific information. A number of books on sports law have been handled in this way as are some sport histories and other current monographic titles. The SPORTDiscus policy is to include full abstracts for most advanced level materials (only a few publishers will not allow this) but the Table of Contents is a time saving, alternate way of adding value and accessibility to other records. To view records with Tables of Contents, search under: contents in ab and then: monograph in dt or look at the following excellent examples: AN 403060, AN 404169, AN 343895, AN 404778 or AN 404256 (AN=403060 etc.)

CANADIAN OLYMPIC ASSOCIATION LIBRARY

As of May 15, 1997, the Canadian Olympic Association has donated its Library collection of monographs, serials and documents to McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. The collection contains works on the Olympic Movement, the summer and winter Olympic Games, Pan American Games and Commonwealth Games. The collection will be located in the Rare Books and Special Collections Department of the McLennan Library. In a recent conversation with Irena Murray, Dept. Head, the collection is packed in boxes at the moment. The Rare Books and Special Collections Dept will be moving to new quarters (4th Floor of the McLennan Library). This area is undergoing extensive renovations. It is expected that by September the collection will be available for use during regular business hours. This Dept's reference services number is : 514-398-4711.

NATIONAL SPORTING LIBRARY

The National Sporting Library (NSL) in Middleburg, VA, held a groundbreaking ceremony on June 2 for a new 15,000 sq. ft. library building. The library, a research center for horse and field sports, will construct the state-of-the-art facility on the same site as Vine Hill, the 1804 brick mansion it has shared since 1969 with The Chronicle of the Horse magazine. Construction will begin this summer. The estimated cost of the new building is more than $4 million. The total funding for the project is $8 million, which includes an endowment to insure the Library's permanence. The NSL is also a contributor of its catalogued books to OCLC's WorldCat (Online Computer Library Center, Dublin, Ohio) and since 1987, has 6,000 monographic records of its equestrian sports collection on WorldCat.

SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE, BABSON LIBRARY

Springfield College was host to the 1997 annual conference of the North American Society for Sport History (NASSH) this past May. This is a fitting location for Springfield College is known as the birthplace of basketball, the beginnings the game of volleyball and where important persons including James Naismith, Luther Halsey Gulick, Charles Morgan and Amos Alonzo Stagg flourished. The discipline of physical education became firmly established here and some of the early US Physical Education undergraduate and graduate degrees were offered. The Babson Library reflects this long history of physical education and contains in its open stack collection results of decades of devoted collection development to support this distinctive college program.

In the Rare Books Collection, the works read by the College's illustrious personages and other faculty and donors can be found. In its early history the College had close ties with the YMCA and was known as the International YMCA College for a time. The Babson Library online catalogue, Web Voyager, is available via the Internet at the address: www.spfldcol.edu. This is the web address of Springfield College, so click on Babson Library, then DATABASES and WEB SITES under Resources, scroll down to Web Voyage Online Catalog. Prior to searching the catalog do look at the help screen which explains how to search the Voyager online system effectively.

Since 1992, the Library has reported all cataloguing records to OCLC's WorldCat, but to have access to all Babson Library holdings search via the Internet address.

SURFING THE WEB

There are many new web sites for the sports surfer to access. The Sport Information Resource Centre has been kept busy establishing hot links to some of these sites. NASSH announced its web site at the annual conference (nassh.uwo.ca). Some parts are still under construction (Directory of Scholars, New Publications, NASSH news), but these should be completed in the next few months. Recent issues of the IASMHF news (International Assoc. of Sports Museums and Halls of Fame) has a growing list of sport museum sites up and running. A few of the more developed sites include:

Hockey Hall of Fame: www.hhof.com
Intl. Swimming H of F: www.ishof.org
Pro Football H of F: www.profootballhof.com
ProRodeo H of F: www.prorodeo.com

A number of sites have initial pages up and running but are not completed as yet:

Intl. Tennis H of F: www.tennisfame.org
Olympic Museum: www.olympic.org
Intl. Bowling Museum and H of F: www.bowlingmuseum.com

SPORTS ARCHIVES

In the past year many of the Canadian and American archives associations and university libraries have worked diligently to mount brief descriptions of their archival holdings or, in some cases, their fond level (the Canadian term for record group) or record group description s/finding aids at a web site. The more sophisticated web sites include rudimentary search engines where the researcher can search general or specific terms, e.g. sport, recreation, equestrian, football. This type of access is of great assistance to the sports researcher, for through these brief or fond level descriptions the researcher can assess whether the repository contains the primary sources which are required.

In Canada, the archives of the national sporting associations tend to be concentrated at the National Archives of Canada (www.archives.ca) while many of the provincial archives hold the archives of local or provincial sports organizations. These latter sites combine the institutional and government archives through one provincial web address:

British Columbia Archival Union List library.ubc.ca/WWW.0.archbc/select
Archives Association of Ontario www.fis.utoronto.ca/groups/aao
Archives Society of Alberta www.glenbow.org/asa/home.html

In the United States, the University of Idaho maintains a research web site index of 1200 web sites in North American and the world which describe the holdings of manuscript repositories, archives, rare book libraries and other research sources. Each site has been tested and evaluated for appropriateness (address:www.uidaho.edu/special- collections/Other.Repositories.html).

Of the Halls of Fame mentioned above only the International Swimming H of F offers an outline of their archival holdings.

AMERICAN ALLIANCE FOR HEALTH, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, RECREATION AND DANCE

It has recently been brought to the editor's attention that a special Centennial Issue of AAHPERD's Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport was published in May 1985, but this issue was not supplied as part of the regular subscription to this journal. This 120 page, 100th Anniversary issue was edited by Dr. Roberta J. Park and consisted of historical essays on the development of physical education in the US, relationship of physical education to biological science and medicine, social Darwinism, anthropology of race, the anthropometry movement, English public school athletics and values, the rise of sport and PE in the American military establishment, among many other topics.

Libraries with a microfilm/fiche edition of Research Quarterly from University Microfilms will note that this Centennial Issue has not been included either. AAHPERD headquarters reports that there are no copies left of this issue. To assist reseachers immediately the Table of Contents will be added to the AAHPERD web page (www.aahperd.org) and individual articles can be photocopied for 40 cents per page. We are working on finding a way to re-publish this whole issue. It is hoped that the next few months information will be available on how libraries can obtain or purchase the whole issue in either paper, microformat or online full text.

THE SPORTING NEWS LIBRARY

Jim Meier, Librarian, at the Sporting News Library reports that a new online catalogue system called Athena, has been purchased for the library. This system produced by Nichols Advanced Technologies Inc., includes both a windows-based and Mac-based searching module which is needed to serve all persons on the Sporting News staff. The Library will also be utilizing the OCLC retrospective conversion services to convert records to their new online system.

SPECIAL LIBRARIES ASSOCIATION

The Special Libraries Association is in the process of forming a Sports Caucus to complement the Baseball Caucus. At the present time, any SLA member can contact Peter Moon to offer signing the required petition which requests SLA executive to establish this new caucus. There is a fee of $10 to join this budding caucus. Contact Peter Moon at: Email:peter_moon@hsb.com or write to: Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection & Insurance Co, One State St. 8th Floor, Hartford, CT 06102-5024.

SPORTS EVENTS CALENDARS/DIRECTORIES

Recently a number of publications and online services which list forthcoming sporting events have come to light. At the 10th Scientific Congress of the International Association for Sports Information, Mike Laflin from Sportcal gave a demonstration of this Internet-based service. This database produced by Sportcal Global Communications in the UK has approximately 15,000 national and international sporting events and is updated daily. Some sports are not as comprehensively covered but in the coming months, most like will be more information. For the casual web surfer, only the basic details of the event are listed. If one subscribes to this service there is access to sponsorship information and the more detailed event description. To search and view the basic information via Internet, use the address: www.sportcal.co.uk. The subscription price for commercial organizations is $1500, but for non-profit institutions the yearly subscription is $500. Sportcal has formed a partnership for the national/intl events in Australia with Australia's National Sport Information Centre who maintains the Australian sporting events calendar online. For more information contact: Graham Smith, Marketing Director, email: grahams@sportcal.co.uk

Another online service Eventline is available to many libraries who subscribe to OCLC's full service. Eventline produced by Elsevier Science Publishers, is mainly a conference/trade show database, and was found to have few sporting events listed.

In the print publication realm, a recent directory covering US local, regional, national and sporting events was published, entitled: Chase's sports calendar of events: 1997: the day-by-day directory of local, regional and national sporting events and recreational activities of all kinds. Lincolnwood, IL: Contemporary Books, 1996. 348p. ISBN 0809231336 ISSN 1091-2959 $29.95 This volume is edited by Steve Gietschier of The Sporting News in St. Louis. The 1998 edition is under production and should be available in late fall 1997.

A semi-annual international sporting event directory listing events officially recognized by the international sport federations is: Sports events of the GAISF members : Manifestations de sports des membres de l' AGFIS. Monte Carlo, Monaco: General Association of International Sports Federations. (Former title: GAISF calendrier)

And lastly, there is the annual IEG Sponsorship Sourcebook (formerly the biennial Official directory of festivals, sports and special events) published by the International Events Group in Chicago (IEG) (ISSN 0894-0649; address: 640 North LaSalle, 60610-3777). The latest edition is 1997 with the 1998 edition available in November. The cost is $199 US plus $15 S&H. This publication contains the basic location/date information on US arts and sports events, plus the budget, media and sponsors. This publisher also has other products, e.g. IEG Intelligence reports (indepth reports on sponsorship activity in a given sector such as golf). See their web site at: www.sponsorship.com.
