1.2 SPORT INFORMATION RESOURCE CENTRE (SIRC)

SIRC staff have been working hard on many enhancements to their products and marketing over the past 6 months. Listed below are a few of the initiatives:

SPORTQuest Update

As readers know, SPORTQuest is the SIRC website which organizes over 14,000 sport-related websites the world over (www.sportquest.com). Recently over 200 free references were mounted on the site intended for use by busy school teachers. Recognizing that teachers have little preparation time, these document records describe physical education programs and are intended to assist teachers in creating various strategies to help children develop motor skills, enchance attitudes of self confidence, team building and cooperation, promote safety and injury prevention and contribute to the life skills required to succeed in today's fast paced environment. Articles are from well known periodicals, e.g. Journal of Physical Education , Recreation and Dance, Journal of Teaching in Physical Education, and essays from collected works. In addition, the SPORTQuest site has developed a special section on the Winter Olympic Games, Nagano 1998.

SPORTDiscus Updates and Database Enrichment

Sport information specialists and researchers will be happy to know that the January 1998 update of SPORTDiscus (which is expected by mid February), will now include over 13,000 sport-related website URL records. These URLS have also been indexed thus allowing additional access points to the information. Included also in the January update are additional sport databases including: a) The Olympic Museum database of monographic and serial records of over 11,000 records; b) the Atlantis database of Spanish language periodical articles, monographs etc. c) an update of the Heracles, the French language sport database, to over 71,000 records. With this update the SPORTDiscus database will contain over 500,000 records. Congratulations to the hard working SIRC staff in reaching this benchmark in the year of their 25th anniversary!

A recent communication with the Library at the NCAA elicited the news of a new librarian, Mary Johnston, who has been with the NCAA as a software developer since 1991. Mary reports that the NCAA website (www.ncaa.org) has grown tremendously since it was introduced in spring 1996. This website contains descriptions of NCAA rule books, statistical and instructional manuals, record books, videocassettes and other publications. Ordering is not yet available through the site, but purchases can be made by mail, phone or fax using the order forms provided on each page.

In addition to the Sports Library, the NCAA News, statistics, news releases, championships information, membership information, one has the ability to email the NCAA staff. Requests requiring research within the NCAA archives are forwarded to Mary (she can be reached also at: mjohnston@ncaa.org).

Other news from the NCAA is the NCAA Joint Policy Board has decided to move NCAA headquarters to Indianapolis. The move is scheduled in the summer of 1998. Indianapolis portrays itself as the "amateur sports capital of America" and put together an impressive bid that will significantly reduce NCAA operating expenses.

1.8 UNITED KINGDOM INSTITUTE OF SPORT, SHEFFIELD

Alan Brailey, spokesperson for the consortia, and Denise Harrison, Faculty Librarian, Education and Leisure Management at the University of Sheffield report the exciting news that a consortium of Sheffield institutions won the national lottery bid to establish a national Institute for Sport. The consortium partners include Sheffield Hallam University, the University of Sheffield, Sheffield City Council and the Hospital Trusts.

The Institute will be funded mainly by the National Lottery but contributions will come from other sources including the private sector. Goals of this cooperative project include: a) setting standards and giving a new priority for sport; b) ensuring the establishment of facilities and support services needed by elite athletes; c) providing up-to-date information, coaching expertise, training techniques for athletes. The overall goal is to produce medal-winning elite athletes.

This area already has a number of key facilities in place, e.g. the Don Valley Stadium, which was built for the World Student Games of 1991, with other facilities to be incorporated or built in the next few years.

Included in the bid is provisional costing for a state of the art library/information service. It was proposed that this would be a stand-alone service although it would have organisational links to the two universities and the Sports Library, which was set up for the World Student Games and is now housed in the Sheffield City Libraries. The local Sports Health and Leisure Group will be discussing information provision at its future meetings.
