Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles

The web designers at AAFLA have been busy during the summer installing further fulltext and photo images on their website (http://www.aafla.org) In addition to the previously announced scholarly serials, Journal of Sports History, AAFLA has now added, Sporting Traditions, the journal of the Australian Society for Sport History from Issue 1, 1984 to date. Readers of previous NASLINE issues will recall that the scanning of the Olympic Review 1894-1994 is underway with the PDF volumes added in reverse date order (so far 1994 to 1990 has been completed.

In addition to the above serials the AFFLA website also includes an exhibit entitled, "The Spirit of Friendship through Sports: Poster Images from the Pan American Games, 1951-1999. The accompanying text is in English and Spanish.

AALFA's list of fulltext monographs and reports has also grown. Added this summer is a new AAFLA-commissioned report entitled, Children and Sport Media. This study examines children's consumption of eight different sports media - television, movies, video games, magazines, newspapers, books, radio and the Internet.

Scholarly websites

Scholarly Sport Sites: A Subject Directory (SSS)
http://www.ucalgary.ca/library/ssportsite

On July 14, 1999 the above subject directory was launched by your editor. Having gathered data on websites of interest to the academic and sports library community for over a year and a half, it was thought that this information should be "published" electronically, for the benefit of many. The intended audience for this website includes faculty/students at colleges and universities, coaches and other sport professionals, and the kinesiology librarians, archivists and information specialists interested in sport information dissemination. Professional and college sports are well served with a plethora of commercial or individual websites and contain up-to-date news, local events schedules, game and tournament results, chat rooms, commentary and additional web links. The more scholarly resources, found on some college university sites or intermingled on sport-specific directories are lost in the shuffle for attention.

The guiding principles for Scholarly Sport Sites includes:

  • Most sport-specific organizations or information is left to other sites, whether commercial or under the aegis of national/government sport organizations. The only section which includes sport specific links is the Database/Directory-Sport Specific, where those cited are very comprehensive sites (some have over 1000 links). In addition, some national sport administration bodies, for example, Australian Sports Commission/National Sport Information Centre has a very comprehensive site which includes directories of many types which cover Australian sport very extensively. The same is found on SIRC's SPORTQuest website in the Canadian Sport section with the sport-specific national, provincial and local sport organizations and other Canadian sport services

  • Organizational names will appear in English and language of origin or other official language, plus the acronym. This goal is not yet met in all cases but will be in the future. This will provide more access points for all users of SSS.

  • When other websites have a comprehensive listing, SSS will link to those websites. For example, the college/university departments and faculties of kinesiology, physical education and sport sciences is the most comprehensive on the Sport Information Resource Centre's SPORTQuest website. As additional departments are found, the page website reference is sent to SIRC for inclusion in their website (the person who accepts these departmental page references is Susan Duncan, Email: sduncan@sirc.ca).

  • In some cases the available websites do not cover a topic indepth and a "reader's advisor" is added (back to the editor's roots as a reference librarian!). A case in point includes the section on Ancient Games (in Games Organizations section) and in the Tests & Testing section (in Databases/Directories section). Additional work is planned, in consultation with a librarian at SIRC, to include a concise "how to search SPORTDiscus" section in the coming year.

  • Collaboration with other website developers - Preliminary email discussions have taken place with other website creators to explore the feasibility of other websites specializing in or becoming more comprehensive in certain topics or subject areas.

Future development on the SSS website will include the addition of more nutrition and exercise/fitness websites after an analysis of the large backlog of possible sites.

Online Booksellers and Video Sources

Readers of Scholarly Sport Sites may have noticed that a Los Angeles-based bookseller, Sports Books, disappeared from the list of Bookstores/Booksellers in SSS. This store went out of business during the summer.

In addition, after many months of using multi-search engines some publishers with a web presence were found and added to the SSS website. They include: Meyer & Meyer Sportverlag GmbH http://www.meyer-meyer-sports.com/ Walla Walla Publications http://www.asc.zipworld.com.au/

An especially useful, very comprehensive publishers' website was also found recently. The Publishers' Catalogues Home Pages web page is found at http://www.lights.com/publisher/ Created and maintained by Peter Scott at the University of Saskatchewan, this site has publishers web addresses listed by country. Note that the US University presses are in a separate category on the US page.

Online Publications and Documents

This section on Scholarly Sport Sites website under Bibliography of Selected Fulltext Documents had a number of titles added during August.

The American Academy of Pediatrics Policy Statements are available fulltext at: http://www.aap.org/policy/pprgtoc.cfm

There is good representation of these 3-5 page statements on many aspects of sport for children. A search engine is provided plus a listing by title. Sample titles include: In-line Skating Injuries in Children and Adolescents (RE9739, 1998), and Strength Training, Weight and Power Lifting, and Body Building by Children and Adolescents (RE9196, 1990).

PUBLICATIONS UPDATE

This list is compiled from cataloguing records created by the Library of Congress, British Library, National Library of Australia, National Library of Canada, OCLC's WorldCat, Books in Print and other current awareness lists. Selection is made with academic and special sport library collections in mind and covers a wide range of material on physical education, the social sciences of sport, sport administration and sport sciences. Pre-publication records (CIP) are included if the expected publication date is within a few months.
