1.0 News from Sports Organizations1.1 NASLINInternational Association of Sports Museums and Halls of Fame and the North American Sport Library Network October 27-30, 1999 Lake Placid, New York
Feedback from participants of the first Joint Conference of IASMHF and NASLIN has been most positive. Many sessions had strong participation from members of both organizations, especially the NASLIN session on Photo Collections and Websites: To Digitize or Not to Digitize. This session featured James Gates, Library Director, National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum and the co-speaker, Douglas Stark, Archivist/Librarian, Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and Museum. Agnes Croxford, Managing Director of the Leisure Information Network in Toronto demonstrated the flexibility and scope of the LIN database. Baseball book author, Joe Wallace, recounted his experiences using various archival collections and provided librarians/archivists and museum professionals with the most important institutional conditions that assist the avid archives researcher. Kent State University Reference Librarian, Kara Robinson discussed her varied experiences as moderator of three lists/e-conferences supplying much needed advice on the pitfalls one can encounter. A corporate-based speaker, Jeff Moyer from Bell & Howell Learning Inc (formerly UMI) afforded a look into the future of large digitized, historical research collections outlining the work being done presently at BHL.
The three days in Lake Placid were not all work, work, work.
Social events provided a wonderful setting for members to
intermingle and discuss topics of mutual concern. On Friday
afternoon, after tours of the Lake Placid Olympic Training
Centre, tryouts were held on the temporary bobsled track and
a few daring NASLIN members demonstrated their skills on the
bobsled.
At the Saturday afternoon meeting of the NASLIN Steering Committee, Gretchen Ghent was re-elected Chair (to 2001). The seven Steering Committee members have their term extended to 2001 also. They are:
The Steering Committee accepted the resignation from Jan Todd and thanked her for her participation on the NASLIN Steering Committee. Future NASLIN Conferences The 8th Conference of NASLIN is slated for August 10-11, 2001 hosted by NASLIN Steering Committee member Cindy Romaine and her employer, Nike Inc at the Nike campus in Beaverton, Oregon. Discussions are underway for 2002 and there is a possibility that the 9th conference will be a joint IASMHF/NASLIN conference held in Calgary, late October 2002.
1.2 Sport Information Resource Centre (SIRC)Retirement of Gilles Chiasson Debra Gassewitz, SIRC President announced the retirement of Gilles Chiasson on December 31, 1999. Gilles founded SIRC in 1973 and under his guidance and leadership, SIRC has developed the world’s leading sport database, SPORTDiscus. Over the years, Gilles has worked diligently and enthusiastically with international partners to position SPORTDiscus as the premier international sport database. His foresight and support of new technologies has helped SIRC to become a leader in sport information. Please join the SIRC staff and Board of Directors in congratulating Gilles on his well-deserved retirement. SIRC Staff Robert Gallaher has joined the SIRC team as Sales and Marketing Manager. One of Robert’s responsibilities is the new SIRCUIT initiative with key national sport associations and their members. SIRCUIT is designed to support each association’s mandate of informing and educating their membership with a combination of SIRC services and products, tailored to the association’s needs. Key components in SIRCUIT are the SIRCRetriever, a customized current awareness service, which electronically delivers the latest SPORTDiscus citations and the SIRCExpress document delivery service. Robert can be reached at rgallaher@sirc.ca
1.3 Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles (AAFLA)As reported in earlier issues of NASLINE, AAFLA has many important digitizing projects underway. A quick scan of their website reveals that two more years of Olympic Review have been completed (1988-1989 which are added to 1990-1994), and other documents in the Official Reports section. This latter section has two 1904 documents that are known as the unofficial "Official Reports". They include:
Lucas, Charles J.P. The Olympic Games 1904. St. Louis, MO: Woodware & Tiernan Printing Co., 1905 See the AAFLA website: http://www.aafla.org/ In addition, AAFLA has recently concluded an agreement with the International Centre for Olympic Studies at the University of Western Ontario to digitize the periodical Olympika: the international journal of Olympic studies (annual, ISSN 1188-5963, v1, 1992-) and the Proceedings of the International Symposium for Olympic Research (biennial, 1992, 1994, 1996, 1998). For tables of contents for these two publications see the ICOS website: http://www.uwo.ca/olympic
1.4 Springfield College Babson Library/ArchivesSpringfield College’s Babson Library in Springfield, Massachusetts is the new location of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) Archive Collection. The collection, housed at the Brennan Center Annex was relocated from AAHPERD’s National Headquarters in Reston, Virginia. AAHPERD is the largest organization of professionals supporting and assisting those involved in physical education, leisure, fitness, dance, health promotion, and all specialties related to achieving a healthy lifestyle. The AAHPERD Archive Collection was establishing in 1960 by Mabel Lee, the first woman president of the Alliance, and an outstanding leader in the physical education field. Now the papers, photos, sport clothing and memorabilia of Mabel Lee (covering the period of 1899 to 1975) are themselves a part of the Archives. Due to the continuing growth of the collection, it had become necessary to find a research-oriented academic institution that was able to make all the materials available by rapidly processing the current collection and maintaining its future integrity. Springfield College was chosen as the perfect repository for AAHPERD’s legacy. AAHPERD has always maintained a close relationship with Springfield College. The College has a historical connection to the YMCA, the Olympic Movement, the invention of basketball by James Naismith, and the formal creation of volleyball. Springfield offers a doctorate in physical education, as well as graduate degrees in health science, movement science, physical education and athletics, sports studies, recreation and leisure studies. Students will use the AAHPERD Archive Collection extensively for research and course work. The AAHPERD Archive Collection comprises materials from all six associations that make up its Research Consortium, as well as collections that have been donated from AAHPERD’s leaders and prominent organizations. More than 2,000 feet of archive materials will join the Rare Books, Archive and Special Collections of Springfield College. The plans are to have the AAHPERD Archive Collection processed completely within two years and available for researchers both on-site and through the Internet. 1.5 NCAA Library/ArchivesThe NCAA, including the NCAA Library and Archives, moved from Kansas City to Indianapolis during the summer of 1999. The official library re-opening was celebrated January 20, 2000, with an open house for the staff. More than half the staff attended, toured the new facility, and previewed the library's OPAC that is now available for the staff at their desktop. As a result of the great push to simplify the move process, many staff members donated their files to the library. Among these contributions is a collection of Title IX documents, some championships results files and meeting materials from various NCAA committees. Librarian Mary Johnston, Archivist Ellen Summers, who has rejoined the library staff, and Library Assistant Karen Burrow are working hard to get these and other items integrated into the library's collections. Contacts: Mary Johnson at mjohnston@ncaa.org. And Ellen Summers at: esummers@ncaa.org 1.6 Indiana University HPER Librarian Vacancy Indiana University Libraries, Bloomington Located fifty miles south of Indianapolis, the Bloomington campus of Indiana University supports a dynamic academic community of 34,000 students and 1,500 faculty.
