OTHER MEMBER NEWS

Congratulations to Jan Todd, NASLIN Steering Committee member who successfully defended her PhD. thesis in December 1994. Dr. Todd's dissertation is entitled, Physical Culture and the Body Beautiful: an Examination of the Role of Purposive Exercise in the Lives of American Women, 1800-1870. We look forward to her dissertation becoming available from UMI in the next year.

As reported in the latest IASMHF Newsletter, Canada's Sports Hall of Fame suffered a 55% decrease in its 1994 federal grant and elimination of its 1995 federal funding altogether. As a result Cheryl Reilly, the Hall's Curator lost her position. At this point in time we do not know what kind of access researchers will have to this important sport archive.

SPORT INFORMATION RESOURCE CENTRE

SIRC has a general internet address which is monitored every work day. For reference questions and general queries etc. send your e-mail to ref@sirc.ca

SIRC is also developing a World Wide Web page and now has the basic work completed. Their HomePage address is: www.sirc.ca . The comprehensive list of forthcoming conferences are also available at this HomePage address and, in the future, SIRC will input the serials list of over 1200 journals currently indexed for the SPORT Database.

Gilles Chiasson, President of SIRC is also pleased to report that the SPORT Database will soon be enriched with the dissertations from the Sheffield University Library (UK) dissertations project. As soon as Sheffield has an opportunity to change their indexing format to be compatible with the SIRC software, the data on UK sport-related dissertations will be added to the SPORT Database.

On a sadder note, Gilles also mentioned that the Canadian federal government funding (Sport Canada) for SIRC has officially been reduced by 35%, resulting in a loss of $140,000 support to SIRC's operations. However, Gilles has also resolved that SIRC will survive this financial blow and have financial consultants at work making plans for a fully, self-sustaining operation by April 1996.

During the past few months, SIRC and the National Sport Information Centre, Australian Sports Commission have arranged an exchange of personnel. Jill Haynes from NSIC has been ensconced at SIRC and Richard Stark (VP, SIRC) has been in Australia. We asked Jill to report on her experiences and she submitted the following report entitled, Would You Swap an Australian Summer for a Canadian Winter? "NSIC has recently purchased the SPORT Database to load inhouse as the basis of its catalogue. Using the Data Research sofware, the SPORT records will be stored in MARC format, and enhanced with full text of ASC publications and images from the slide collection. Examining SIRC's procedures will help in the implementation of the new system at NSIC and will assist in the continuing smooth exchange of data between the two sites.

One of the most important facets of the exchange is the personal contacts made. While working at SIRC, I have been involved in a number of projects, including indexing, preparing the monthly tapes for the vendors and assisting with the establishment of the SIRC World Wide Web page. Bringing a staff member into an organization from another similar institution provides a different perspective to issues, the opportunity to learn another's organizational procedures and stengthens the ties between the two institutions. The exchanges included the use of the other's home and cars, so the only cost involved to the parent institution was the airfares. It provided a great opportunity to work and live in a different country for a period of time."

Ann Romeril, Reference Librarian at SIRC has been "meandering in cyberspace" for the past months in order to keep up with all the developments and sources of sport information for her colleagues at SIRC. She offered to share this information with NASLIN members in the next few issues of NASLINE. Below is a brief survey of listservs for readers and/or library clients:

Listservs are online conference discussion groups which individuals can subscribe to by sending a request to the list owner or moderator. The list owner or moderator will send a summary of essential guidelines to follow. Here are a few Ann has found which may be of interest:
