PUBLICATIONS UPDATE

1ST CENTURY PROJECT

We are delighted to inform NASLINE readers that a major 25 volume publishing effort on the history of the Olympic Games is about to be made available to libraries and the public in early 1996. For the past 10 years, The 1st Century Project in Los Angeles has researched the history of the Olympic Games, discovering papers, photographs, correspondence and other sources of information around the world which was previously not known to researchers. The primary goal of this research is to produce a highly readable set of volumes on the 100 year history of the Olympic Games. Each volume covers an Olympiad (begins with the Opening Ceremonies of the summer Olympic Games) or four year period. Along with the history of each Olympiad, each volume has a chapter on the political aspects with the developments and/or growth of the federations, National Olympic Committees and other important events surrounding that Olympiad or Olympic Winter Game. Each volume will include a comprehensive chronology for that four year period plus an extensive bibliography. Other highlights include the translation of Pierre de Coubertin's writings, correspondence and selected newspaper stories into English. Information on the two cancelled Olympic Games which heretofore has not been known will also be included. Volume 1 is entitled, The Ancient Games and the Bridge to the Modern Era and Volume 24 will contain an hundred years statistical compilation and the Master Index.

The set is completed with v25, the Atlanta Games. The writers for the Project include many former Time Life writers with the well-known Laura Foreman as the Editor-in-Chief. This set will be available on subscription beginning in January 1996 and carry on to 1997. The cost will be $17.95 US each volume. Bibliographic details include: Series title: The Olympic Century: the Official 1st Century History of the Modern Olympic Movement Address of Publisher: 1st Century Project, World Sport Research and Publications, 1424 North Highland Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90028 Orders tel no: 213-461-2900 FAX: 213-461-2997

Plans are also underway to produce a series of videos which will be a companion to the book series. Later, in 1997 and 1998, all of these sources will be merged into a CD-ROM version. So collection librarians and "Olympiafiles" put aside your pennies for you do not want to miss the acquisition of this magnificent work.
