North American Sport Library Network (NASLIN) No. 7, April 1996
5th Conference of NASLIN Hosted by the Hughston Sports Medicine Foundation All systems are on GO!.... for the upcoming 5th conference of NASLIN..... Our local arrangements coordinator, Elaine Powers, is busy with the last minute details of conference arrangements. She assures us that participants will have an opportunity to savor typical southern food at our banquet Saturday night. A sumptuous feast is planned. As reported in our last issue of NASLINE, our keynote speaker is Dr. John MacAloon, noted Olympic historian and researcher from the University of Chicago. Dr. MacAloon has authored such works as This Great Symbol: Pierre de Coubertin and the origins of the modern Olympic Games and International education and Olympic sport. There are a few program changes since the printing of our brochure. On Friday the session on The Sports Publishers' Perspective: paper or cyberspace? will feature Richard Lipsey, Editor of Sports Market Place who will now be joined by Steve Gietschier of the Sporting News. We are pleased to have Steve join this panel for he will bring insights to the current specialty newspaper and book publishing part of the panel. For our State of the Art session on Friday morning, the representative from the Paul W. Bryant Museum will now be Taylor Watson who is curator at the Museum. Laura Rose, Librarian of the National Sporting Library (equestrian sports) will join Taylor at this session. The new technologies sessions (Producing CD ROM's and WWW Development) featuring Wayne Wilson from the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles, and Ann Romeril from the Sport Information Resource Centre, should provide participants with some practical as well as theoretical knowledge of these technologies. Women and Sport, a topic of current concern, will will feature Marjorie Snyder, Associate Executive Director of the Women's Sports Foundation, Michael Salmon, Reference Librarian, AAFLA and Mila Su, a Master's candidate/Librarian from Penn State. Connie Wernersbach, Atlanta Centennial Olympic Properties, a speaker at our fourth conference, and Tom Meyers, Archivist will update us on Atlanta Olympic Games organization, planning, and print material. For our last session on Saturday, the Sport Information Resource Centre will be represented by Richard Stark, Vice-President and Ann Romeril, Reference Librarian. Do get those questions and suggestions ready for this session on the future of the SPORT Database. For background reading see various issues of the International bulletin of sport information (especially 1989 issues) Registration deadline is April 10. This library currently has over 3,732 monographic records and 129 videotapes. An initial comparison of the two databases revealed that there was an 18% overlap with the SPORT database. This collection has excellent coverage of Olympic Games documentation from the early part of this century and especially the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal and the Olympic Winter Games, Calgary 1988. As part of this project retrospective indexing will take place for the articles in the Olympic review/Revue olympique and the Bulletin du Comite international olympic back to 1946. The goal is to complete this indexing prior to the Olympic Games in Atlanta. Further discussions are being held with the COA administrators and both parties are now examining ways in which greater information cooperation can be achieved through joint library management and the development plus dissemination of COA's information properties. This theme of information cooperation and publications dissemination is also being explored by SIRC with the Canadian amateur sport organizations who are undergoing significant changes due to federal government funding cuts. SIRC is focusing especially on how they can cooperatively assist the Canadian sports administrators in the delivery and management of their information products. In addition, as recently announced by SIRC, the Olympic Museum Library in Lausanne, Switzerland, has signed an agreement with SIRC in January 1996 whereby the Olympic Museum's library records will be added to the SPORT Database. The Olympic Museum, founded in 1922 contains over 15,000 volumes by and about the IOC, the Olympic Games, general sport materials and those related to art, health and culture. It is anticipated that these records will be added in the July update to the SPORT Discus. Frequent Web crawlers may have noticed also that SIRC has now loaded the list of serials which are indexed for the SPORT Database on the SIRC website (http://www.sirc.ca/perlis.html) Those who work with serials can appreciate the tremendous effort put into mounting this list of over 1200 titles. SIRC staff worked hard to ensure the list is up-to-date, has ISSN numbers where possible and provides current addresses of publishers. SPORT Database records have also been enhanced in the database reload for the Dec. 1995 SPORT Discus update and the March 1, 1996 Dialog update. Reloads enable database producers to eliminate errors in records which have been identified and changed over the years in the in-house database, plus add new fields or access points. Records now have the ISSN information for the serial articles and the French and Spanish subject headings (field tags FRSH and SPSH respectively), plus Italian and Spanish abstracts and descriptors (ITAB, ITDE, SPAB, SPDE). Those libraries with in-house online catalogues which have the capacity to interface with CD-ROM products will welcome the addition of the ISSNs. It is hoped that in the near future, libraries will be able to provide users with the interface between the database record and local library serial holdings for the periodical issue found during a search of the CD-ROM databases. With this addition and the already included ISBN information for monographs, the SPORT Database will be well prepared for this anticipated and expected enchancement. Fully integrated library and database information systems will soon be a reality. Karen Kaiser, Archivist, reports that the AAHPERD archives on well on its way to becoming accessible to researchers via a www site now that the archives are on the AAHPERD computer network. Over 800 photographs were processed and entered into the database which join the 500 AAHPERD publication titles. The portrait collection is in process now. Progess has been made in a preliminary organization the Association for the Advancement of Health Education materials with a Finding Aid on its way to completion. The Sue Hall collection (MC 5) was used as a pilot for determining the Finding Aid format and database structure. This collection has been completed and a Finding Aid is available. The Hall collection includes scrapbooks and memorabilia relating to the Olympic Games from 1932-1980. Also completed are the Finding Aids to the oral histories which will be made available on tapes. Karen can be reached at: kkaiser@aahperd.org or Tel: 703-476-3423. Dave Kelly, NASLIN Steering Committee member from the Library of Congress reports that the National Digital Library, a project of the Library of Congress with funding from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and others, will have its share of sport- related materials. The goal of the National Digital Library Center and other partners is to make available electronically more than 5 million items in full-text format by the year 2000. Recently created is THOMAS, Legislative information on the Internet which contains the congressional record and legislation. Dave's exciting news is that he has suggested the NDL digitize the Spalding guides (e.g. Spalding's offical college basket ball guide, 1905/06- Spalding's athletic library. Group VIII, NY: American Sports Publishing Co.) Look for further news in the ensuing year on when the guides are up and available for consultation. World wide web access to this collection is from the address: http://lcweb.loc.gov/ndl/per.html
