SPORTS STATISTICS

Lately on both the SPORTHIST and SPORTSOC listservs there have been many queries about sport statistics. In past issues of NASLINE, a number of publications have been listed, but there seems to be a need for special column on this topic. Dave Kelly, from the Library of Congress, mentioned that the publications from the National Sporting Goods Association is one important source. Although a little pricey, $195 per year, their publications provide statistics from a large base and have various socio-demographic features. They include: Sports participation in 1994 (or 1993 or 1995, etc), ISSN 0882-8210. In the State by state part, they have interviewed 40,000 American households, individuals 7 years and older, on 35 sports (ranging from aerobic exercise, bowling, baseball, dart throwing, exercise walking, volleyball).

Variables include: total days of participation, frequency, state by state. Series I and II list stats by gender, age group, region, ethnicity/race. In the Lifestyle Demographics, stats are listed by designations: affluent singles, low/mid income singles, affluent empty nesters, etc. These statistics publications may be obtained from: National Sporting Goods Association, 1699 Wall St. Mt. Prospect, IL 60056. Tel: 708-439-4000 FAX: 708-439-0111

SIRC (SPORT INFORMATION RESOURCE CENTRE)

In a previous issue of NASLINE it was announced that a retropective thesis project was underway in the United Kingdom. Frequent users of the CD version of SPORTDiscus will have noted that the June 1996 update (use the command UD=0796 and DT=thesis to find them) contained many theses records. Denise Harrison, Subject Librarian (Leisure Management) at the University of Sheffield's Main Library, has been busy for the past two years managing this project. With the assistance of part time staff, they have added over 771 titles ranging in dates from the mid 1970's to 1994, on all aspects of sport. As these titles are not listed in the ASLIB Index to Theses these records will be a great assistance to sport researchers. Plans are underway to add thesis titles on a regular basis.

SIRC's enhanced document delivery service called SIRCExpress is up and running. This includes a more competitive pricing structure ($9 per transaction for the US, $11 for Canada, plus $.16 per page), and more choice as to type of delivery service including faster delivery. Come September, SIRC will also be part of the Ariel interlibrary loan service, which allows documents to be scanned and sent electronically to those on the same service. SIRC also has negotiated with CanCopy for copyright clearance. The interlibrary loan of books however, goes only to North American libraries.

Also, this September the SPORTDiscus on CD is available with an additional commercial vendor, OVID Technologies. The first issue of the CD product will not contain the online SPORT thesaurus, but this will be remedied soon. CD subscribers can expect monthly updates for an annual cost of $1625US (one workstation). The price is slightly higher than the SilverPlatter which is $1595 US (one workstation access). As many readers know OVID software has good SDI capabilities. For further information see their web site: http://www.ovid.com or via snail mail: 333 7th Ave. New York, NY 10001

Accolades are also due to SIRC staff for the work on their web site SPORTQuest which Microsoft cited as Best of the Web (see the SIRC site at www.SPORTQuest.com and the Microsoft site home.microsoft.com). With so many more links to other sources of sport on the Internet, the busy web user is well served by this organized approach. This is truly a master index for sport information. If you discover a source not listed here, contact Nancy Banks at SIRC. Her email is: nbanks@sirc.ca

Another service available from SIRC is their mailing label service. SIRC regularly updates their mailing list (and includes the NASLIN members too). Lists are supplied on sticky labels and are for a one-time use only. Mailing labels cost $85 US per thousand (there is a minimum charge also) and must be prepaid. Requests should go to: Richard Stark, Vice-President,
Sport Information Resource Centre,
1600 James Naismith Dr.,
Gloucester, Ontario
K1B 5N4
Tel:613-748-5658
FAX:613-748-5701
Toll free 1-800-665-6413.

The World Wide Web

In addition to the splendid web organization for sport information by SIRC, a member of the SPORTHIST listserv recommended the PressBox web site which contains historical and current data on Canadian athletes and the Canadian sporting community. The senior editor at PressBox is Robert (Bob) Ferguson, the author of Who's who in Canadian sport. This site has close to 5.000 biographies on past and present Canadian athletes. The address is: http://www.pressbox.com.

NATIONAL COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

Ellen Summers, Librarian at the NCAA, reports that the Marilyn Van Valkenburg has donated her late husband's collection which includes books, clippings and other college athletics memorabilia. Jim Van Valkenburg was the former NCAA Director of Statistics and worked at the NCAA from 1968-1992. Prior to his NCAA position he was a sports writer for the AP Wire service. Ellen also mentioned two new publications are recently available: Official NCAA Division I 1996 Graduation-Rates Report. $12. Includes summary of data for enrollment, admissions, graduation-rates, academic standards, time spent to graduate and degree programs of NCAA Div I universities. Data on student-athletes is broken down by sex, race and sport.

Drug-testing Education Program. $1.50 (Discount available for multiple copies) Explains the legislation and procedures regarding the drug testing of student-athletes and describes NCAA drug use prevention programs.

In addition to the above publications, University Microfilms International in Ann Arbor, Michigan is in the process of microfilming the NCAA news (ISSN 0027-6170, v1, no1, March 1964-, 18 nos. per year). The approximate cost per reel for back issues is $65-85 (35mm reels) with the total cost for the backset approximately $200. Contact UMI for details at: 1-800-521-0600 Ext. 2888.

OLYMPIC GAMES

Although the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games are over and we were not able to inform you of forthcoming publications prior to the Games, there are a number of works listed below which are recommended for most collections; note especially, Jennings, MacAloon, Pieroth, Wallechinsky, Yew.

A number of months ago those of you on the IASI listserv or other email lists received a note regarding the availability of the Official Report of the Centennial Olympic Games, 1996, which will be published in Fall 1997 by Peachtree Publishers for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games.
