Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles
Planning for the 6th Conference is well underway. There are
some exciting sessions in the works. Our feature speaker is
Dr. Robert Edelman, noted sports researcher and author of
the recent, Serious fun: a history of spectator sport in the
USSR (NY: Oxford UP, 1993).
Deborah Hannah from the First Century Project (25 vol.
The Olympic Century: the Official 1st Century History of
the of the Modern Olympic Movement), will speak on her experiences
unearthing heretofore unknown Olympiana information and
photographs.
Another session or two will focus on sports statistics
along with other sessions to keep you up to date on the
Internet/Web.
Karen Goddy, from AAFLA and an executive member of the
International Association of Sports Museums and Halls of
Fame will bring us up to date on IASMHF happenings. Allsport,
the international sports photographic service will present
a session on computer applications for storing and retrieving
photographs.
And we haven't forgotten about the all-important food,drink
and be merry activities have the AAFLA staff in deep consultation
for there are so many choices to consider in the LA area.

NEWS FROM MEMBER ORGANIZATIONS
SPORT INFORMATION RESOURCE CENTRE
On the database front, the December update (just released
from SilverPlatter January 30) to SPORTDiscus will contain
a further addition of UK theses. As promised by Denise Harrison,
the project coordinator, an additional 129 theses were submitted
covering principally 1995-1996 (83 titles), 31 from 1992-1994
and the remaining from earlier dates. SPORTDiscus now contains
more than 400,000 records! With this update a full reload
of the Heracles database was done. Heracles now has 66,400
records.
For those Interlibrary Loan departments who have implemented
ARIEL, please note that SIRC's ARIEL address has been changed
to: 207.216.36.15 or you can use: ariel.sirc.ca.
For all you Web surfers: SIRC's service, SPORTQuest (www.SPORTQuest.com)
has been recognized once again for its excellence - this
time by the NetGuide Gold Award. If you discover a source
not listed on SPORTQuest, contact Nancy Banks at SIRC (nbanks@sirc.ca)
One other piece of news, Richard Stark, VP, SIRC, has
decided to follow his stars elsewhere in the world of high
tech. We wish him well in his future career.
NATIONAL COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION
The NCAA now has a website and can be found at: www.ncaa.org.
The site has information on championships, result and statistics.
Ellen Summers also reports that three new publications are
available:
NCAA Softball Rules 1977 $4
The Revenues and expenses publication has now been split
into two publications:
- Revenues and Expenses of Division I and I
- Intercollegiate Athletics Programs, and Revenues and
Expenses of Division III Intercollegiate Athletic Programs.
The costs of each is ca. $6.
INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SPORTS
MUSEUMS AND HALLS OF FAME
The Nov/Dec. issue of this association's newsletter announced
the location of their annual conference (Nov. 5-8, 1997
at the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Ft. Lauderdale,
FL) and also notified members of the appointment of the
new Association Administrator (Teri Cober, IASMHF, 4400-A
Ambassador Caffery Parkway, Suite 200, Lafayette, LA 70508.
